Leopolda was one of the first railway stations built in Italy. Leopold II of Tuscany, it has hosted the fruit and vegetable market since 1929. Following the transfer of the market, a large group of associations elaborated the project for the transformation of the structure into a socio-cultural centre. In 1996 the Municipality of Pisa adopted the project and started the restoration works using a European funding granted by the Tuscany Region.
