About

The Congress of South African Trade Unions ( COSATU ) is the largest (of three) South African workers' unions  . Founded on December 1 , 1985 , unites 21 trade unions, whose members in total are 1.8 million people. It is in alliance with the African National Congress and the South African Communist Party . The president is Madisha Villi.

The Congress has since 2012 joined the class struggle -oriented World Federation of Trade Unions (while retaining its membership in the International Trade Union Confederation ). At the 2016 Durban congress, Michael McWeiba was elected President of the World Federation of Trade Unions.
