About

In 1995, a group of fourteen young, driven individuals founded Hiwot Ethiopia as a youth initiative. They were concerned about the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) hazards, and they wanted to play a positive role in stopping the disease's spread, especially among young people. It began as a small initiative, grew into an association, and later became a registered non-governmental organization (NGO). It has since re-registered as an Ethiopian Civil Society Organization (CSO)/NGO. Hiwot Ethiopia has been working with a range of domestic and foreign partners to implement several multi-year projects.

Hiwot Ethiopia envisions a future where children and youth in Ethiopia live healthy, happy, and productive lives. The program areas of Hiwot Ethiopia include health, education, children’s and youth rights, gender equality, livelihoods, and emergency response. The organization’s cross-cutting agenda places a strong emphasis on environmental protection and supporting people with disabilities. Currently, eight projects are being implemented in the Amhara Region and Addis Ababa. In addition to its main office in Addis Ababa, the organization has one branch and three sub-branch offices in the North Shewa zones of the Amhara Region. The organization plans to expand its project sites to include the SNNPR, Sidama, Benishangul-Gumuz Region, and Oromia.
