When the civil warring factions signed a peace agreement in 1992, the state had been bled dry and was one of the poorest in the world. Since then, Mozambique has been working hard on its reconstruction – with visible success. The economy is growing by 7 to 8 % every year, and the proportion of those living in poverty has been reduced from 70 % in 1997 to approximately 55 %. Massive gas reserves were discovered in the north of the country in 2012, but huge problems remain: The highly indebted Mozambique is one of the ten poorest countries in the world and languishes in 185th place on the Human Development Index (out of 187 nations).
