The Caritas network is made up in Portugal of twenty Diocesan Caritas, united in the Portuguese Caritas, and numerous local groups that work in close proximity, in the parishes and communities.
This networking is a feature of this institution and gives it the ability to have eyes and ears throughout the national territory. With the collaboration of professionals and a wide range of volunteers, Caritas can articulate its actions to the varied needs of the many who seek it.
Each Diocesan Caritas has its legal and canonical autonomy which means that, despite the national structure, each organization has its own specificities and can set its priorities and act accordingly. These specificities must be in accordance with the Caritas Strategic Plan in Portugal, agreed among them all and sanctioned by the Episcopal Commission of Social Pastoral and Human Mobility.
Caritas Portuguesa is a service for the animation of the Church's Social Action in Portugal.
