In direct relation to this global mission, the Office for the Southern Cone is in charge of coordinating the actions carried out in Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay, also providing technical assistance to the activities of the ILO offices in Argentina and Brazil.
The main fields of competence are international labor standards, social dialogue, social protection and job creation. The team provides technical advice and brings international expertise to partners - governments, employers, and workers - in these fields of competence.
In addition, the team from the Office for the Southern Cone contributes to the general work of the United Nations through cooperation with other agencies of the system on specific issues, key to the development of the Region (summary with main actions in this area).
It should be noted that the ILO, founded in 1919, is the world institution responsible for the elaboration and supervision of International Labor Standards. It is the only United Nations agency of a “tripartite” nature since representatives of governments, employers and workers participate together in the elaboration of its policies and programs, as well as in the organs and structures of the Organization. This unique way of reaching agreements gives the ILO an advantage by incorporating “real world” knowledge about employment and work.
