Description

UNFPA, the UN Population Fund started its cooperation with the Republic of Moldova in 1995. In 2010 we are commemorating 15 years of UNFPA presence in Moldova.

Since 2001, the UNFPA assistance to the Republic of Moldova has grown a lot and has become consistent.

In 2004, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the International Conference for Population and Development (Cairo, 1994), the Moldovan president joined those 70 heads of state and other world leaders, who made their commitment to an action plan aimed to ensure global access to information and services in the field of reproductive health, to consolidate the observation of the human rights and reduce poverty. He was the only head of state from the CIS countries who signed the Declaration of the World Leaders.

In 2004, the Government of the Republic of Moldova made a voluntary contribution to the UNFPA for 5 years, 2004-2008. This fact was welcomed by the UNFPA headquarters in New York. The UNFPA Executive Director, Thoraya Ahmed Obaid, highlighted the understanding and opening to collaboration of the Government of the Republic of Moldova in an UN annual report.

Since 2007, UNFPA started the implementation in the Republic of Moldova of the first country programme covering a five year period (2007-2011) with an initial budget of US$ 2,25 mln. The UNFPA Country Programme was developed as a result of a very close cooperation with national partners, from the UN system and other donors based on the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). This programme is part of the Government development priorities and objectives, including the Millennium Development Goals; Principles of the International Conference for Population and Development (Cairo, 1994), as well as the fundamental human rights principles.

The UNFPA Country Programme has 3 components: (a) Reproductive Health (b) Population and Development and (c) Gender. The territorial coverage of the Programme is national, including the eastern regions of the Republic of Moldova.

The UN Population Fund supports the Government of the Republic of Moldova in responding to the issues in the field of population and reproductive health. The UNFPA activities offer the necessary frame for the development and harmonization of the legislation and national regulations to the European standards, aimed at Republic of Moldova's accession to the European Union.

The activities carried out by the UN Population Fund in Moldova contributed considerably to promoting the human rights observation, set up quality services for teenagers and youth, creation of many model-clinics of reproductive health, development of professional experience of the national specialists in the field of health and education, objectives stipulated by the portfolio of implemented projects. The implementation of this portfolio in partnership with the Government of the Republic of Moldova led to significant progress in reducing maternal and perinatal death rate, the rate of abortions and rise in the indicators of reproductive health.

At the same time the UN Population Fund, in partnership with UNICEF, offered technical assistance to the Education and Youth Ministry in implementing the subject of Health Education in schools. The promoted activities increased the degree of training of the school teachers and psychologists, the professional and methodical training, the activity of coordination, the information support and promotion in school institutions.

The Ministry of Economy and Trade, The Health Ministry, the Ministry of Social Protection, the Ministry of Education and Youth, the National Office of Statistics became governmental partners over these years. The total assistance offered by the UNFPA to the Government of the Republic of Moldova during the period of collaboration exceeds $US 5 million, assistance developed within 14 projects.
