The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been working in Kenya on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since 1975. GIZ currently employs more than 200 national and 60 international personnel. Through its various project activities, the GIZ office in Kenya is also involved in eleven partnerships with the private sector, both here and in Germany.
On behalf of the German Government, GIZ is working with local and international partners to improve access to safe water and health care services, especially for the poor and members of the informal sector. In agriculture, GIZ activities focus on innovation to increase employment, food security and drought resilience. A new priority area is technical and vocational education and training for tyoung people, to equip them with appropriate skills to meet the demands of the labour market, especially the private sector.
Other areas of support include renewable energy, good governance with a focus on combating corruption, peace-building and migration management . GIZ also provides support to refugees, voluntary returnees and host communities. Various regional programmes are also being implemented in the areas of environment, as well as sports as a means of development.
